Our Wedding

When I heard the music, I knew it was close. The song playing was a long intro into the song that Aria and I had chosen during which the girls would start the procession. It was “I swear,” a nineties toon that was being sung by Aria’s sister Brie, who had a beautiful voice. If she wasn’t planning to be a doctor like her parents, she could make a living as a singer. Each of the girls had a little basket of rose petals to drop down the aisle but hanging from the handle by thin ribbons which matched their dresses hung rings. The rings were for them after Aria and were married. They were symbolic of being a part of our bond for as long as we lived. The adoption was finalized in court, with the judge waiving the wait after considering all the factors. The rings were to celebrate that publicly.

Calli led, with Cami following behind. Calli, as usual, was somber, taking her job seriously, but I could see the twinkle in Cami’s eye, and knew she wasn’t going to be able to resist improvising their entrance. It came in the form of her huge grin directed at me, and a boisterous wave before she pulled her arm back and dropped petals at the same time Calli did. They both took a seat on the stairs, just one step down from where the adults would all stand during the ceremony. I saw Talia lead the way, with Sarah following, then her two sisters. My best man was the only man besides my deceased brother Marek, and Edgar, the man who was like my righthand, that I could consider trusting to the job, and that was my only male cousin of age. His birthday had been just about halfway between Marek’s and mine, and whenever the three of us could get together, we were like the three musketeers. I didn’t see him very often these days since he and his wife actually lived in my birthplace, New York City.

Aria hit it off with his wife so well that she had suggested they go with us on part of our vacation/honeymoon. It was mostly vacation, because the girls would be there during part of it. I agreed, thinking it would be great to catch up with Beckham, aka Beck, plus give him and his wife Nyla a chance at a second honeymoon. They had apparently been married since he was eighteen. No children yet, but they both expressed that perhaps the time without stress would make that happen for them, because it wasn’t a physical issue that a doctor had found. They were both healthy and able.

Abruptly my attention was awakened as the wedding march began, and I found myself trying like hell to remember my handwritten vows. I headed meetings with large numbers; I made million dollars deal that required a silver tongue and tons of finesse, but right now I might as well be a lump of clay for all the good my brain was functioning, or not functioning.
